Sometimes I feel like I’m locked in a perpetual conflict against Big Food and the damage it’s causing to our health and our diets. With Monsanto constantly unveiling new horrors almost every year, it certainly feels like an uphill battle.
However, it’s the little things like hearing your success stories that keeps me more than happy to keep on exploring how a healthy diet and lifestyle can change our lives for the better.
Good news everyone!
It feels really good to see a corporate giant adopt healthier policies as a result of changing customer demands.
Nestlé, a megacorporation with a shady track record like saying that access to water is not a basic human right and even trying to steal the water from a little town, may actually be changing its ways.
By 2015, in response to consumer desires for more natural products, Nestlé has vowed to get rid of the artificial flavors and coloring in most of its products.
For example, it plans to replace Red 40 and Yellow (FDA approved colorings) with annatto for the Butterfinger’s center. It will also use natural vanilla flavor extract as a substitute for artificial vanillin typically used in Crunch bars.
Why Did They Decide To Change?
Trust me, it wasn’t from the goodness of their hearts.
It was a simple of matter of profit. Nestlé itself confirms that it based its new course of action on a Nielsen 2014 Global Health and Wellness survey that revealed that up to 60% of Americans did not want artificial flavors in their food.
Although this has the potential to be really good news, I’m still a bit skeptical, especially given Nestlé’s track record.
This is why we need to be especially vigilant during the next year to make sure Nestlé stays on track with what it promised.
This means keeping an eye out for not only the ingredient list on their products, but also tracking any news articles covering the transition.
What This Means For You
Ultimately this news confirms that, collectively, consumers have the power to make their voices heard and veer the market away from dangerous and unhealthy business practices.
However, before this collective power can be formed, the change needs to happen within your life. This means making the necessary changes to your diet and your lifestyle to improve your overall quality of life.
Additionally, you also need share, but definitely not preach, how these changes can help mostly anyone you know.
Ok, this sounds really nice but what do I do with my chocolate cravings?
Remember, this is only an announcement that things will change. Most chocolate candy bars are still riddled with artificial colors and flavors that can cause serious damage to your family’s overall health and wellbeing.
So steer clear of them.
Instead, you can purchase dark chocolate bars, just make sure they don’t have any hidden artificial colors or flavors.
As usual, I recommend sticking to making your own desserts and sweets. To satiate that chocolate craving of yours you should definitely try making your own chocolate avocado pudding or almond fudge cake.
