You don’t need to wait for winter to get a cough – a sore throat and stuffy nose usually means you have a cold. But what can you do for relief if you don’t like Big Pharma’s cures? One of the best holistic medicines for a cold or a sore throat is pineapple.
Why Pineapple?

You don’t want the chemical-filled, artificially flavored, over-the-counter cough syrups. Pineapple obviously tastes better than cough syrup, but what else makes it so good at relieving a cough or a sore throat?
The benefits of pineapple include a special enzyme that controls mucus and reduces inflammation of the soft tissues in your throat, nose, and sinuses. This enzyme is called bromelain, a natural anti-inflammatory. When mixed with a few other natural holistic ingredients, it can become a potent remedy for coughs and colds.
What Other Ingredients?

First, be sure to use fresh pineapple. Bromelain supplements often come from the stem of the pineapple, but the fruit itself and its juices are your best bet for this DIY cough syrup. Ginger, another anti-inflammatory, and lemon will, of course, be in the mix as well; you already know how healthy these superfoods are.
Another ingredient we’ll add to this cough and mucus suppressor is honey, which has a throat-soothing natural antibiotic and anti-inflammatory. Make sure you use raw, organic honey! And lastly, we’ll add warming cayenne pepper for its pain relieving properties and more cleansing powers.
All Natural DIY Pineapple Cough Syrup
Make a batch of this great curative cough syrup at the first sign of a tickle in your throat. It keeps in the fridge for a week to 10 days or more. You can take it as often as needed – even if you haven’t felt a cough coming, you can use the combination of pineapple, ginger, lemon, chili, and honey to prevent bacterial and viral attacks on your immune system.
This recipe yields about 1 cup.
Ingredients
- 2 thick slices of fresh pineapple, peel removed, but core intact (about two good cups)
- 1 Tablespoon honey
- ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper*
- A thumb-sized piece of fresh ginger, peeled and sliced or rough chopped
- 1 lemon – juiced
*If you’re preparing this cough syrup, omit or reduce the amount of cayenne pepper.
Instructions
- Rough chop the pineapple, including the core, which is not only edible but particularly healthy.
- Add all ingredients to a blender or food processor and blend until smooth.
The mixture is now ready to use, but if you want a smoother syrup, push through a mesh strainer.
Keep in the refrigerator and take as needed.
Remember
Canned or pasteurized pineapple juice doesn’t have the same bromelain benefits as fresh pineapple.
Honey can be harmful for children under 12 months. Don’t use this cough syrup for kids under 1-year-old.
Get ready to heat up your immune system and cure your cough.
