This homemade Mango Coconut Ice Cream is the perfect recipe for curbing your sweet tooth. This is probably for the best considering that the average American consumes 3 lbs. of sugar every week, according to Forbes. In addition, the USDA reported that between 1950-1959 and 2000, individual consumption of caloric sweeteners increased by 39 per cent. They also say that in the year 2000 alone, “each American consumed an average of 152 pounds of caloric sweeteners.”
If the amount of sugar intake keeps increasing, how much more are we consuming today?
Sugar: Everyone’s #1 Frenemy
According to this Agriculture Fact Book, “USDA recommends that the average person on a 2,000-calorie daily diet include no more than 40 grams of added sugars. That’s about 10 teaspoons, or the amount of sugar in a 12-ounce soft drink. Sugar— including sucrose, corn sweeteners, honey, maple syrup, and molasses — is ubiquitous and often hidden.”
“In a sense, sugar is the number one food additive. It turns up in some unlikely places, such as pizza, bread, hot dogs, boxed mixed rice, soup, crackers, spaghetti sauce, lunch meat, canned vegetables, fruit drinks, flavored yogurt, ketchup, salad dressing, mayonnaise, and some peanut butter.”

In addition to sugar having a tendency to sneak up on us, consuming too much is cause for a host of health risks. According to Authority Nutrition, “Controlled human studies show that large amounts of sugar can lead to severe metabolic problems, including insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, elevated cholesterol and triglycerides – to name a few. Added sugar is believed to be one of the main drivers of diseases like obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and even cancer.”
This Sweet Thang
While this world likes to bombard us with sugar-filled foods and beverages, it’s not impossible to escape them and find healthy alternatives, like this ice cream recipe. Ice cream is another American favorite that tends to be high in sugar. About 100 g of vanilla ice cream contains 21 g of sugar. That’s already more than half the daily recommended intake!
While the following recipe does contain a form of sweetener (honey), honey has a lower glycemic index than table sugar, reducing the risk of blood sugar spikes. Moreover, mangoes have got to be one of the sweetest fruits out there. Despite its sweetness, a study found that consuming mangoes can lower your body fat percentage, blood cholesterol levels and even blood sugar levels. What’s more, while a high fructose intake can lead to obesity, a diet rich in mangoes can fight it.
Medical News Today reported that a team of researchers “looked at how mango affects fat cells in the laboratory. Mangoes contain a range of chemicals known as polyphenols. These include mangiferin, catechins, quercetin, and kaempferol. They found that some of these polyphenols reduced fat cell’s ability to multiply.”
