It never fails to amaze me how simple and effective homemade products can be. More than that, they feel good. It brings me peace of mind to know the shampoo, deodorant and toothpaste I use is all natural.
Did you know that shampoo, deodorant and toothpaste manufacturers are not required to test their products for safety? Now that does not feel good to me.
They can get away with more than just that. The ingredients list of these widely used products may not be accurate.
For example, the fragrance of a product can be classified as a registered trade secret meaning the company does not have to disclose the chemical concoction.
Independent tests have found that among the top branded bath products there are at least 14 hidden compounds per fragrance formula.
Dare I go on? Always.
The not for profit team over at the Environmental Working Group has been actively pursuing this issue for more than a decade and has revealed that the Federal Drug and Food Administration could be to blame.
According to the EWG, the FDA has authorized the personal care products industry as autonomous from regulation. In plain speak, the beauty care companies are their own police.
The Cosmetic Ingredients Review panel is essentially comprised of members of the cosmetic industry.
Oh the hypocrisy!
Reports from the EWG have listed the ingredients of some of the more widely used bath products as having the potential to disrupt normal hormone function.
The FDA has even admitted that labels like “natural” and “hypoallergenic” can be nothing more than marketing buzzwords with no legitimacy.
Now that I’ve made it clear the dangers of manufactured bath products, I’m going to do you one more favor and give you the power to make your own all natural toothpaste, deodorant and shampoo.
