If you’re reading this, congratulations, you are a beautiful example of a human being. The way you are is partially determined during the creation of your DNA and genes. Genes are comprised of your very unique DNA and they distinguish your physical construction; in other words, they decide how you look!
Humans are comprised of around 20, 000 to 25, 000 different genes, given to us from both our biological parents.
For the most part, it’s believed that genes are unchangeable because they are hereditary, but new research has suggested that your lifestyle can alter your genomes.
A branch of science, called epigenetics studies the notion that you can change your genes without actually altering your DNA.
Gene-Enhancing Diet
One of the ways we can control the growth of our genes is through the food we eat. Next time you eat, consider the food you’re eating as a trigger for either good or bad processes in your body.
When you eat the right foods, you can decrease and even eliminate your chances of developing many harmful diseases.
Throughout multiple iterations of epigenetic research, studies concluded that a plant-based diet can have the most life altering effects on your genes, and therefore on your health.
In fact, a plant-based diet is believed to have a direct impact on the following medical conditions:
1. Prostate cancer
Studies conducted on 31 men with prostate cancer suggested that adopting a plant-based diet for only 3 months decreased the protein production of over 450 genes that contribute to cancer growth. Blood tests also revealed that the existing tumors shrunk during this 3 month period as well.
2. Aging
Although this is not a disease in itself, there are many conditions that are associated with the process of aging. When your body is eating a plant-based diet, it produces more telomerase, which is an enzyme that is released by your genes.
Telomerase is an enzyme that is believed to slow down your body’s natural aging process, so when you eat foods that promote the production of this enzyme, your body has more of an enzyme that inhibits aging! Pretty amazing stuff!
3. Inflammatory conditions, obesity and vascular health
A study comprised of 126 individuals, half on plant-based diets, the other half continuing with an average American diet, showed that plant-based diets can help you lose weight and lower blood pressure. The participants who adjusted their diets to plant based diets all lost weight and their blood pressures fell by an average of 10%.
In addition, the genes that produce inflammation were significantly less active after the participants ate plant-based foods for a year.
The facts are all here! Changing your diet can have a remarkable impact on not only your overall health, but on the physical building blocks of your being! Carbohydrates, vitamins, fats, proteins, fibers and minerals can affect your genes by encouraging healthy processes and hindering harmful bodily processes.
If this doesn’t encourage you to adopt an organic, colorful, plant-based diet I don’t know what will! Do you and your family a favor, change your genes for the better and give yourself more time to enjoy your life and passions, illness-free and without medication!
