Turmeric, and specifically its active component curcumin, is one of the most powerful spices you can use to treat multiple afflictions and illnesses. There are actually over 7,000 studies conducted that prove its efficacy.

It’s anti-inflammatory properties have been well documented by natural health practitioners, blogs, and holistic wellness publications. This particular spice should be included in everyone’s wellness routine for both long term maintenance and acute inflammation relief. This homemade turmeric supplement makes it simple to get it into your system every day.

DIY Turmeric Supplements

While turmeric can be incorporated into many dishes like curries or vegetable soups, it is not a very concentrated dose. Of course you still get some benefit from using it this way, but more can be done. And while it is possible to just mix a few tablespoons with water and drink it, if you’ve ever done that you’ll know just how bitter it can taste and how hard it is to get down.

But fear not! This simple recipe makes taking turmeric both easy and tasty.

Increase The Power Of Turmeric

There are certain ingredients included into this supplement that increase the bioavailability of curcumin, which is the anti-inflammatory compound in turmeric. These ingredients in the turmeric bombs really supercharge the effectiveness of these supplements:

  • Quercetin: a bioflavonoid that inhibits an enzyme that decreases the activity of curcumin.
  • Black Pepper: contains the alkaloid piperine, which has been shown to increase the bioavailability of curcumin by 150%.
  • Fatty Acids: have been shown to increase the bioavailability of curcumin.

Turmeric Bombs

There are two variations of the turmeric supplement that you can make, one containing raw honey and the other containing just coconut oil. The honey version completely masks the taste of turmeric and other ingredients and is perfect for children. The coconut oil version is sugar free, but it hardens in shapes that can be difficult to swallow and has a slight taste.

Here is what you’ll need:

  • ⅓ of a cup of organic ground turmeric
  • 1 tbsp of quercetin (about 10 capsules, emptied)
  • Big pinch of freshly ground black pepper
  • Either 3 tbsp of organic coconut oil
  • Unbleached parchment paper
  • Optional addition: 1 tbsp raw honey
  1. Line a baking sheet with the parchment paper and make room in your freezer for it.
  2. Select one of the binding agents. If your honey is thick, melt it in a saucepan until it is warm and pourable. Do the same with the coconut oil, but don’t make it hot just warm.
  3. In a bowl, combine the binding agent, quercetin, black pepper and turmeric. If you used honey, you should have a thick, pliable mixture. If you used coconut oil, you should have a thick mixture that can form pills.
  4. For the honey variation, pinch small amounts of the ‘dough’ and form them into little balls and place on the baking sheet. For the coconut oil variation, it is easier to use spoons to shape them into pills and place on the baking sheet.
  5. Freeze them until firm and then move them to a container and store them in the freezer.

This recipe yields about 50 pills. You can’t overdose on turmeric, but if you do ingest a few of these a day, the coconut oil may upset your stomach and the honey contains sugar. Feel free to use these turmeric supplements as much or as little as you want, they are a great way to fight inflammation and keep your body healthy and happy!
