This isn’t your typical “stop eating everything and survive off water” detox diet. Instead, you consume coconut oil, a medium-chain fatty acid (MCFA) that is full of healthy fat and energy. This energy is the reason coconut oil is a great detox food. By slowly incorporating coconut oil into your food your body will be accustomed to this healthy fat. Often times during a detox, people experience die-off symptoms.
These symptoms, including headaches, joint stiffness, chills, and foggy-thinking, are short-lived and indicate that your detox is working.
Detox Die-Off
These symptoms are a result of you stirring up all the toxins in your body and flushing them out. Think of it as a murky pond that you are letting clear up. Someone has disturbed the sand and it will take a moment to settle but when it does, things will be calm and clear. You’ll feel much better and that’s thanks to coconut oil. The medium-chain fatty acids are sent to your liver for energy instead of into your cells for storage, which is perfect for detox when less food is being consumed.
The coconut oil detox will speed up healing by flushing your body of toxins. The detox will give your digestive system a bit of a break, which is important because your body will be processing and evacuating the toxins that have built up in your body.
Oil Your System
Going on a coconut oil detox is meant to give overall health back to your system, but it can also be used to treat specific disorders. What can the coconut detox help with specifically? Candida. Because the coconut oil is completely void of sugar and other carbs, you will starve candida. People who suffer candida will notice a decrease (or disappearance) in sugar cravings, fatigue, eczema, acne, sinus infections, and poor concentration.
Fungal Infections. Most fungal infections are linked to an imbalance of bacteria and fungal organisms in your body. Coconut oil is high in lauric and caprylic acids, which are antifungal. A coconut oil detox will completely rid your body of these harmful fungi.
Digestive conditions. You’ll be eliminating all the harmful and toxic organisms that are taking up intestinal space, alleviating yourself from digestive conditions like IBS and leaky gut syndrome.
Viruses. Lauric acid in coconut oil is converted into monolaurin which has antiviral properties that protect against and destroy, lipid-coated viruses like herpes and influenza.
The Cleanse
You’ll need raw, organic extra virgin coconut oil, that is unrefined, expeller- or cold-pressed, unbleached and not deodorized. As previously mentioned, ease yourself into the detox by slowly adding coconut oil to your diet. Most people detox for 3-7 days.
Start your day with 2 tablespoons of coconut oil.
Take 1-2 tablespoons throughout the day as needed. Do not exceed 14 tablespoons a day.
You can mix the coconut oil into lemon water or plain organic yogurt if you can’t tolerate the oil on its own. DO NOT add sugar–small amounts of stevia to sweeten is alright.
It is very important that you’re drinking water during your cleanse. The water will nourish and hydrate your body, as well as facilitate the cleansing benefits of the coconut oil. And you don’t need to stick to plain ol’ water.
- 1 cup pure lemon juice
- 6 cups of filtered water
- 1 teaspoon high-quality sea salt
This water will excite your taste buds and provide your body with needed nutrients. You may lose some minerals during the cleanse, which is where the salt comes in handy. Do not sweeten your water with any kind of sugar, as carbohydrates are off-limits during the 3-7 day cleanse. Use stevia if need be.
