Sometimes chocolate is just necessary. First domesticated by the Mayans over 2,000 years ago, the word cacao means “Food of the Gods,” and surely the “Food of the Gods” comes with zero guilt, just like this Chocolate Superfood Smoothie recipe, which is the perfect afternoon pick me up.
Did you know cacao is great for high blood pressure?
Theobromine in cacao increases urine production. Because of this diuretic effect, and its ability to dilate blood vessels, it may be beneficial with regard to high blood pressure.
Did you know cacao boosts mood?
Cacao contains phenylethylamine, a compound that is referred to as the “love chemical,” because our bodies produce it when we fall in love! Phenylethylamine is also a natural energy and metabolic booster, as well as good for cognitive function.
Did you know cacao prevents magnesium deficiencies?
Most people are deficient in magnesium which can cause muscle cramping, migraines or headaches, restless leg syndrome, twitching, heart disease, and anxiety. Low magnesium levels raise our risk of heart attack and stroke. Good news, cacao is one of the best food sources on the planet. Magnesium is required for over 300 functions in the body, including the synthesis of fat and protein, muscular contraction and relaxation, cardiac health and bone building. Magnesium improves blood flow and plays a key role in the metabolism of ATP (cellular energy).
Did you know chocolate may save you from heart attacks and strokes?
Seriously! Studies show that eating a small amount of dark chocolate daily can lower the risk of heart attack and stroke. It is not exactly clear how dark chocolate does this, but it is likely due to a number of factors including the high levels of antioxidants and magnesium.
Stop. Smoothie Time. (You know you can heard the song as you read that!)
In your Blendtec whip up:
1 cup coconut water or coconut milk
1/4-1/2 avocado (you can use banana too)
1 tablespoon cacao powder
1 teaspoon almond butter
1 teaspoon maca
1 teaspoon chia seeds
¼ tsp vanilla or snip of bean
Option to add 1 date or 1/2 packet stevia for sweetness. 1 tsp of organic ground coffee is yummy too!
Top with a dash of cinnamon and cacao nibs.
I like to let sit in fridge about 5 minutes to thicken up a bit. May I suggest a de-stressing Hammer Time dance party during this step.
Enjoy!
