Simple Treatment for Heavy Menstrual Cycles

Some women experience heavy menstrual bleeding, called menorrhagia, which can last more than 7 days. This occurrence can prevent a woman from living life to the fullest due to constant menstruation. (1)

Menorrhagia can also cause anemia, which is a common blood problem leaving people feeling weak or tired. Other health problems can arise such as hormone-related, uterine-related, or other illnesses and disorders. (1)

Recent study has discovered that ginger may, in fact, be an effective treatment in young women with menorrhagia. (2)

Research shows that ginger may offer an excellent solution for women with menorrhagia.

Menorrhagia is surprisingly a very common condition in women. According to a source published last year, approximately 20% to 25% of women reported suffering from it. In addition, one in twenty women between the ages of 30 and 49 see their doctor each year with this condition. (3)

Many conventional treatments suggest iron supplements, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, oral contraceptives, oral progesterone, and progestin-containing hormonal IUD. (2)

Thankfully, a recent finding published in Phytotherapy Research shows us that women with this condition can be treated naturally, with ginger! (4)

The subjects were evaluated for six consecutive menstrual cycles and after the 3-week initial assessment time frame, subjects were randomly split into two groups. One group received 250 mg of dried ginger capsules, while the other group received placebo capsules containing lactose. This part of the evaluation lasted another 3 weeks. (2,4)

Results show that menstrual blood flow dramatically reduced in those treated with ginger.

The group of women that received an intervention with ginger supplements experienced a decreased in blood loss much more remarkable than women that received the placebo. In addition, very little women reported with any adverse effects. (4)

Researchers concluded that, “Heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) is highly prevalent among young women. Considering the significance of appropriate and timely treatment and also the importance of prevention of unwanted consequences, ginger may be considered as an effective therapeutic option for HMB.” (4)

What’s amazing is that not only does ginger help alleviate HMB, but it also has been proven to reduce pain and inflammation associated with dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation). According to a study in the Journal of Alternative Complementary Medicine, ginger was just as effective as mefenamic acid and ibuprofen in relieving pain in women with this condition. (5)

It appears that ginger can ‘kill two birds with one stone’ when it comes to women’s menstrual cycles!
