5 Soothing Remedies For a Sore Throat

remedies sore throat

It’s an unfortunate truth for some of us… we will get sick. If you’re like me then you absolutely hate having a sore throat! There’s nothing worse than that aching, scratching pain when you speak and swallow.

Having a sore throat makes eating, talking, and drinking completely unenjoyable. So for those of you who face the burdensome first signs of a sore throat, beat it to the chase and zap that sore throat before it zaps you!

Remedies For a Sore Throat

  1. Gargle, Rinse, Relieve

It may sound strange, but gargling with salt water will help disinfect your throat, possibly killing the irritants that could be causing you pain! Just make sure you don’t swallow the water because the bacteria may be in the water, and even then, salt water can still dehydrate you!

Staying hydrated is also really important when it comes to treating your sore throat because when your body is properly hydrated, it has the correct defense to fight off unwanted bacteria and viruses.

  1. Coat Your Sore Throat

Try having a tablespoon of raw, organic honey next time you feel a sore throat coming on. Adding honey to warm water and lemon makes for a delicious drink and it has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that will help heal and sooth your throat.

When your throat is coated in a substance like honey, the active ingredients will be absorbed into your throat and create a protective, antibacterial layer, protecting it from further irritation.

  1. Prevention!

Prevention is always better than fighting an uphill battle. If you notice that your kids have been sniffling their noses or your co-workers are sick, then quickly switch to an immune boosting diet.

Eat lots of vitamin C and Zinc when you want to avoid getting sick. Eat foods like Echinacea oil, oranges, berries and dark leafy greens.

  1. Healthy Home

If you find that your sore throat is worse in the morning, this is usually because we tend to breathe through our mouths when we sleep, which makes them dry. I encourage bringing a humidifier into the bedroom so that the air in your room isn’t so dry. This is especially relevant in the winter because artificial heating is notorious for drying the air.

When your throat is cracked and dry it becomes sore and scratching, however it is also extremely vulnerable to viruses! Keeping your throat hydrated will help it build its own defense mechanism against bacteria.

  1. Steam It!

If you think the dry air is making your throat worse and you want a quick fix and don’t own a humidifier, then here’s a trick for you. Boil a pot of water and place the pot in your sink, lean over it and place a damp hand towel over the back of your head. This will create a mini steam room for your head!

This steam will hydrate your throat, not to mention it’s great for clearing your sinuses and detoxifying your skin!

Don’t forget that a sore throat can be the first sign of something more serious like a flu or infection! So make sure that if your sore throat persists, you visit your family doctor!
