If you’re a coffee drinker, you no doubt have your preferred methods and preparations for it. When I was younger, my mom would give me a tiny bit of her coffee in a mug with a whole bunch of milk. The creamy mixture that smelled like mom, with a hint of bitterness and warmth would always hit the right spot. It’s probably not surprising at all that I would grow up to love strong coffee loaded with heavy cream. To this day, nothing smells better to me than a perfectly brewed cuppa Joe, loaded down with decadently delightful dairy.
Ooooh, what about coffee from a French press? The creation process is so hands-on, that the result is almost a different level of relationship with this delightful bringer of morning energy. Or maybe your favorite morning brew involves steamed milk, like a latte or an espresso macchiato for example. There are so many great ways to get your morning buzz on.
But in the vast world of coffee with its myriad roasts and preparations, it’s easy to overlook instant coffee. Some might even say we should. I might have been one of those people at one time, but I’m a convert now. I’ve stepped over to the dark side, and it’s name is dalgona.
Also known as whipped coffee, dalgona coffee is taking the internet by storm. With local cafes shuttering their doors in the face of the coronavirus pandemic, caffeine addicts everywhere are on the prowl for their next big fix. And when all that’s left is instant coffee, we do what we must.
Turns out it’s really delicious, pretty to look at, and easy to prepare too. To make it, all you need is:
- Instant coffee
- Granulated sugar (or sugar alternative monk fruit sugar is a great option)
- Hot water
- Milk of choice (plant-based is great)
Simply combine two tablespoons of instant coffee, two tablespoons of granulated sugar, and two tablespoons of hot water in a mixing bowl. Using a hand mixer or latte frother, beat the mixture until it is a rich golden brown color with a thick consistency.
Next just pour a bit of your favorite milk in a glass and spoon the frothy coffee over the top. It’s just like an upside-down latte! And if you want it to be even more latte-ish, you could just mix the coffee and milk together. Voila! Don’t forget to jump on the #dalgonacoffee bandwagon, and upload your best photo of this pretty sweet treat.
Cheers!
