Great Depression-Era Peanut Butter Bread Recipe Is Making People on Reddit Rave

Dear Reader: These are extraordinary times we’re living in, and while we’ve always got an eye toward health and wellness, sometimes it’s not just about calories and fat grams. Self-care might look like an over-the-top carpet picnic in the living room, or sweet treats that aren’t normally a part of your diet. We believe that sometimes it’s OK to forego the status quo, and that’s why the Pandemic Pantry series includes some “yummy but maybe not for every day” recipes for you to try. Enjoy!

“Ran out of bread under lock down so we made the (delicious) peanut butter bread!” And just like that, a Reddit movement began.

It’s no doubt a familiar story to you by now: the local grocery store is out of something basic that you need. Maybe it’s TP, maybe it’s bread. You think you’ll just make your own bread, how hard can it be? But lo and behold… someone beat you to the active dry yeast too. If you don’t have a few days to make your own yeast from scratch, there’s great news: turns out that you don’t need yeast for every kind of bread recipe. Peanut butter bread is one such bread, and it happens to be delicious too.

Depression-era Baking

This recipe is thought to have first appeared in the Five Roses Flour Cookbook, a Great Depression-era cookbook published back in 1932.

Nearly 90 years later, the minimalist recipe has been making the rounds on the internet, gaining rave reviews and upvotes wherever it goes!

“Boy oh boy will I be making this!”

“It tastes just like a peanut butter cookie!”

“I’ve got this in the oven right now. I used almond milk so we’ll see how it goes!”

“This bread tastes delicious with a smear of butter and will be great for snacks or a sweet breakfast!”

“I can’t wait to try some variations of it this week maybe with [chocolate] chips or a banana added!”

Yes to all of these great ideas! Feeling hungry yet? Here’s how to make the famous Great Depression-era peanut butter bread that’s all the rage. No yeast needed.
