Once these milestones have been reached, you need to continue changing your home to make sure it’s absolutely free of any elements that might undo your progress and harm your family’s overall health.

This means that you need to start reevaluating the things in your home that you may have taken for granted.

This time, I’m talking about something you use almost every day: your dishwashing detergent.

I get it, doing the dishes is probably the most tedious part of the whole culinary process necessary to keep your family happy and healthy. It’s the one part we want to easily speed through so everyone can enjoy family time.

It’s perfectly understandable that we’re more than willing to buy into the whole advertising campaigns promising the fastest acting detergent on the market that won’t hurt our hands.

However, what these ad campaigns willfully omit is the danger inherent to their products. Oh yes, the health risks posed by these chemical products go far beyond simply drying out your hands.

There is a reason antibacterial soaps have been banned in Minnesota and it’s because these products have been linked to the following problems:

Risk of Detergents:

Despite killing the famous “99%” of bacteria, these detergents do nothing to actually prepare and aid your immune system. This is just another example of PR lingo getting ahead of itself.

These detergents contain a chemical called triclosan. This chemical cannot be filtered by our water filtration plants or any living organism. It’s responsible for the destruction of multiple marine ecosystems.

Rampant use of antibacterial soaps only helps strengthen bacteria by forcing it to evolve to a point when it’s completely immune to antibacterial treatment. Thus making super bacteria that can make any infection deadly.

Triclosan is also a hormonal disruptor; it can severely hinder your body’s ability to produce testosterone and estrogen naturally. This can cause serious health issues in the long run.

Finally some detergents are so poisonous that they’ve actually been linked as a cause for infertility.

What can you do?

The first step is identifying what you need to replace as soon as possible. Here’s a handy list of the top ten toxins hiding in your home.

But back to washing your dishes, I’ve actually stumbled across these natural alternatives that will blow your mind.

Natural Alternatives to Detergent

1. Potatoes

Yes, I know it sounds weird. Simply cut a potato in half and soak it in baking soda (if you’re looking to remove rust, use salt instead). Then simply rub the dirty surface with the potato.

It might take time, but this is guaranteed to have no toxic chemicals. If you’re washing a lot of dishes, simply slice off the blackened potato area and re-soak it in baking soda.

2. Baking Soda

Yes, baking soda can even work by itself. However, you will need one very large pot. Fill it with the dirty dishes and water. Add roughly five tablespoons and then boil.

Let it boil for about an hour. Then simply rinse and wipe your dishes.

3. Tea Bags

Yes, you read correctly. By rubbing dry, unused tea bags against your dirty dishes you can absorb the excess grease.

Using these natural alternatives is one of the first and easiest steps to making sure your home is toxin-free.
