One of the biggest fears in anyone’s life is Alzheimer’s. This disease gradually destroys your sense of self as it erodes your memories, your ability to learn new information, your regular habits, and even your ability to speak and walk.
It’s a disease that gives no quarter because it doesn’t spare the loved ones of anyone suffering from this disease. Why? Because a few things are more painful than watching your loved one fail to recognize you after building an entire lifetime together.
Let’s Begin Clearing Some Misconceptions
First of all, Alzheimer’s is not a disease that only afflicts people in old age. Although the majority of people with Alzheimer’s are still over 65 years old, people between 40 and 50 still make up 5% of those diagnosed with this disease.
Unlike some terminal diseases like cancer that can shorten lifespan to mere months, people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s can have a lifespan of 8 to 20 years. But don’t let this convince it’s not deadly, Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease that places incremental stress on a family coping with it.
Simply put, it’s not part of simply growing old, Alzheimer’s ranks sixth amongst the leading causes of death in the United States.
Alzheimer’s Symptoms To Look Out For
- Unable to learn new information
- Memory loss
- Mood changes
- Confusion of when and where
- Increasing suspicion on friends and family
If you or any of your loved ones begins to show any of these symptoms consistently, please contact your family doctor immediately.
Although there is a lot of effort being placed in research, there is still no known cure or treatment to halt the progression of the disease. Scientists have only developed ways of slowing it down. But don’t despair just yet; research has been able to make some connections regarding what factors can cause Alzheimer’s.
So far it seems to be a combination of lifestyle, genetics, and environmental conditions that can affect your brain over your lifetime. Lifestyle factors are in your control, and you can begin by keeping an eye out for the types of medications that might make you increasingly vulnerable to developing this life-threatening disease.
Additionally, did you know aluminum is also a prime suspect?
Popular Medications That Can Cause Alzheimer’s

Over-the-Counter Medication
Let’s begin with the most available and common medication. When you’re at your pharmacy, make sure to keep an eye out for these medications:
- Nytol
- Benadryl
- Piriton
Why? Because in order to make you feel functional, these products constantly constrict blood vessels and can block some nervous system transmitters if they’re taken in large doses and over a long period.
Both these side effects have been linked to being a likely cause to develop some neurological diseases.
Antidepressants
If you’re on medication, keep an eye out for anything containing traces of oxybutynin and doxepin. Medications that contain these compounds suppress transmitters called acetylcholine.
Current studies show that a majority of Alzheimer’s patients have a severe acetylcholine deficiency.
Before you make any radical changes to your medication, always make sure to consult your family doctor to make sure you’re going to be safe.
Or could always try out my go-to ingredient – coconut oil.
