You can easily spend your entire life searching for inspiration. For that moment that finally makes you think, that story that finally connects with you, that person who makes you realize that you can lead a healthier life, who makes you recognize that you can be more active, you can eat better and you can lose weight. You can do it. I hope this story is that inspiration to you.
From 360 to 200 – What It Took To Lose Body Fat
He was watching Netflix, as he often did after work. Binge-watching Miami Ink when a man came on the show who had lost a great deal of weight. When asked how he managed to do it, his answer was simple – he ate better and worked hard at the gym. For John Glaude that was the moment that changed his life.
From then on he realized that he had the power to lead a healthier life. Before then his obesity blinded him to the possibility of change. He thought he couldn’t. He was afraid of failing. And the thought that his weight was slowly killing him depressed him to no end. He was miserable, but felt that there was nothing he could do.
Yet, hearing someone make it sound so simple changed everything for John. He began to understand that if he just learned about nutrition and exercise, and applied what he learned every day, he could lose body fat. He could be in the shape he always wanted to be in. The only thing he had to lose was weight. And that’s exactly what he did.
From A Couch In His House To A Chair On Ellen
Over the next two years he worked like crazy. He documented his workouts and progress on Instagram and slowly started seeing results.
He didn’t embrace any sort of diet craze, but just started eating healthier and more frequently throughout the day. Meals with lean protein, whole grains, and vegetables. He learned that soda was just empty calories, so he stopped drinking it.
To get over his fear of going to the gym, he started slowly by getting on the elliptical or biking for just thirty minutes. And he realized that no one was looking at him. People were focused on working out, on doing their own thing, so there was no reason to worry about what people would think, they weren’t paying attention to him. And even if they were, so what?
Soon he was going to the gym almost every day, working on different muscle groups. Monday chest and shoulders, Tuesday back, Wednesday legs, repeat. He got hooked on going, until his body craved being at the gym. Sitting on his couch watching Netflix all night was no longer something he wanted to do.
The Big Moment
John’s real fame came when he decided to be open and honest about his biggest insecurity – loose skin. Because he was so successful in his struggle to lose body fat, he was left with far more skin than his new slimmer figure required. His arms, pecks, stomach and legs have layers of loose skin.
Despite his incredible amount hard work and determination, he didn’t get that perfect body.
But the most amazing part about his story, is that he doesn’t care! “I’m comfortable in my skin.” He embraces his body and likes to think of the layers as battle scars, as a reminder of what he went through to get here.
That attitude is what landed him on the Ellen Show not too long ago. The YouTube video of him taking his shirt off and showing his loose skin to the world has since received millions of views. He’s received praise and admiration and a number of offers from surgeons to remove his skin for free.
But he’s refused and has remained remarkably humble. He’s still not trying to promote any diet or gym or products. The video wasn’t just some ploy to get a free surgery and the ‘perfect’ body. He doesn’t want it. He’s proud of who he is.
Yet, Ellen has a way of rewarding good people and gave him a new Mustang when he appeared on her show.
How His Story Can Help
Throughout the journey and in interviews since, John has remained focused on helping others achieve what he’s achieved. He wants to be the inspiration that so many of us are searching for, like that man on Miami Ink was for him.
“Losing weight isn’t easy, but it’s simple,” was the most powerful message I took away from learning about his story. We like to overcomplicate things, but really you just need to do it. You need to find that inspiration and hold on to with everything that you have. Let his story be that inspiration for you.
