The sight of businesses shutting down during this pandemic is not just sad, it’s almost eerie. So many streets have an almost dystopic, post-apocalyptic feel. It’s like your walking on an abandoned film set. A peak in the windows shows various states of abandonment, but apparently, in Malaysia the deserted stores tell quite a different tale. The untouched leather goods have become victims of mold, destroying the pricey products left unprotected in the wake of the coronavirus. (1)
Three Month Lockdown in Malaysia
As Malaysia enters its third month of lockdown, the haunting malls are a picture of needless waste with stylish shoes, purses and other leather goods spotted with the unsightly mold. A fashion maven’s worst nightmares, the moldy merchandise is one of the unexpected ways the virus is taking its toll on the economy. (1)
With 44,000 shares, the haunting images have you half expecting to spot a zombie in the background. Images of The Walking Dead set come to mind with the eerie displays of expensive goods left forgotten while the world is forced to hide away from the virus. The Images also prompted King Yoong to comment, “Can ask them to sell at very very low low price?” a testament to a true fashionista’s commitment to finding a bargain even in the heart of this nasty pandemic. Perfect Mold Conditions In Malaysia
Leather is prone to mold and mildew growth when stored in the hot humid conditions of Malaysia. The moisture is a killer in the country, allowing mold to have its way with the unprotected merchandise. (1)
Humidity levels ideal for leather storage are around 40 to 60%. You also need good air circulation. When you combine heat, humidity above 70% and poor air circulation like the conditions found in Malaysia it is a recipe for fungi, not to mention bacterial growth. Another thing leather doesn’t like is direct sunlight. (1)
Take A Leather Care Lesson From Malaysia
Leather also loves sunlight, so if you have your favorite leather accessories from belts to boots and shoes to coats lying unused, make sure they are stored properly. Keep them in a dry, cool space preferably out of the sun. And just be warned, it’s not just real leather. Your faux fashionables can also be at risk for mold. (1)
The unsightly mold appeared in highly unfashionable shades of yellow, green, and blue, with a furry appearance. The goods have been shut up since March 18th and shops remain closed until at least June 9th. (1)
Moldy Malaysia Leather Posts
The images, which appeared on social media, led to many comments. “It’s shockingly relevant the world over and will affect businesses worldwide,” comments Harry Teh. “Good job in bringing awareness.” Others were quick to point out how mother nature can quickly run rampant without humans to tame her. “How fast nature takes over when absence of human,” comments Dave Liew. The truth behind the images is that there’s yet another poor business owner who has much to lose thanks to the virus.
