Memories of my grandparents always bring a smile to my face. There is a special way that grandparents love their grandchild that can’t be explained. Grandparents will love in a way that encompasses time. Growing up, there was an excitement in the air when you knew it was time to visit grandma and grandpa. Their home was magical, with unexpected surprises everywhere you looked. I am sure what seemed commonplace to my grandfather, who was a train conductor before he retired, was fascinating to us. There were trinkets and treasures everywhere, in his antique desk, in his workshop in the basement, even in the garage.
My grandmother wasn’t without her charms as well. Freshly baked cookies in the cookie jar along with an ice-cold glass of milk. Sometimes she would enroll us into helping her bake her famous butter horns which we could look forward to as a treat after a well-eaten dinner. My grandparents were hard-working middle-class midwestern folks who just wanted a good life for their children and grandchildren. When I became a mom, I always said my best gift is and always will be my daughter. This is still true today. My mother would say the same thing about each one of her grandchildren. Each time a holiday or a special occasion came around, the gift she wanted more than anything, was time with her grandchildren. She said there was no greater gift in this world than spending time with the ones you love.
