insomnia remedy linen sprayYou know the feeling. The clock says three in the morning, and you haven’t fallen asleep yet. Maybe you have, and this is the third time you woke up tonight. Perhaps you slept soundly until now, and your body decided that it is morning. You feel tired and frustrated. The house is quiet. Everyone is sleeping except you.

However, that may not be true. Insomnia plagues about 30% of the population, more commonly women than men. One in three people experiences some form of insomnia in their life. Individuals over the age of 60 are 40-60% more likely to have insomnia. Overall, people nowadays sleep 20% less than a century ago. (1)

Why Is Insomnia So Rampant?

There are many factors that are widespread today that contribute to this growing issue.

  • Caffeine – The energizing effects can stay for as long as eight hours. Those who consumed four or more coffees a day were found to have a minimum of one symptom of insomnia by a 2005 National Sleep Foundation poll.
  • Heavy meals near bedtime can cause discomfort and disrupt your body’s ability to settle and relax.
  • Naps/Sleeping In – These habits confuse the body’s natural clock, making sleeping the next night more difficult.
  • Anxiety and stress can overstimulate a person while they are trying to settle down. These worries and fears cause tension that keeps a person awake.
  • Alcohol – One may think that a drink will help sedate them, but this can also disrupt sleep later on in the night.
  • Bright Screens – The light from a computer or phone’s screen can stimulate the brain and make it more alert. (2)

The Hazards of Mainstream Treatment

Approximately ten million people in the U.S. use prescription sleep medicine. These drugs vary from brands like Lunesta, Sonata, Belsomra, Valium, to antidepressants and antihistamines. (3)

Unfortunately, this route has dangerous prospects.

“We are not certain. But it looks like sleeping pills could be as risky as smoking cigarettes,” says study leader Daniel F. Kripke, MD. “It looks much more dangerous to take these pills than to treat insomnia another way.”

His research has shown that participants who used hypnotic sleeping aids had a 5.3-fold higher death risk, and a 35% heightened liability for cancer. The team linked these medications to 320,000 to 507,000 U.S. deaths each year.

Bryan Bruno, MD, chair of psychiatry at NYC’s Lenox Hill Hospital notes that many hypnotic sleeping drugs are habit breeding. “For those at risk of addiction, or with other addictions, they can be dangerous,” says Bruno. “And most of these drugs increase the effects of alcohol.” (4)

Sleep in necessary for a healthy body, but it does not require these perils. Natural methods can be just as effective, giving your body the rest it needs to rejuvenate without inserting toxins into the system. For those who dislike taking capsules or herbs, this remedy is for you!
