5 Treatments That Use Lemon Instead of Cosmetics

lemon skin

lemon skinDo you know what’s in your face cream? Or skin toner? Or any of the other cosmetic products you use on a daily basis? If you did, you probably wouldn’t be using them every day.

Brace yourself for a rude awakening.

Unlike many of the other major manufacturing industries, cosmetic companies are free from government regulation and it’s downright frightening. This means it is up to the manufacturer to decide if the product they produce is safe.

In the face of huge profits, recalls are not something big business is interested in regardless of public safety.

Greenwashing is a common marketing tool used by the cosmetic industry to promote the idea that products are safe. A “natural” label on the bottle of creams, powders, and washes is essentially meaningless.

There is no standard to differentiate between a product that is “natural” and one that is packed with chemicals.

Of the over 10,000 ingredients used in personal care products, only 13% of those have been safety tested by a panel in the last 30 years. Yikes!

Times have not changed despite popular belief.

In the 1930s more than a dozen women in the United States lost their eyesight and one, her life, after using a popular eyelash dye. The main ingredient, p-phenylenediamine, is still used to this day in modern hair dye.

It’s time to change cosmetic AND beauty standards once and for all.

You may not be able to dye your hair with lemon (although it has been proven effective in lightening hair pigment) but these 5 all natural lemon treatments are safe and effective alternatives to the toxic store bought beauty brands you may still be using.

1. Dandruff Mask

The acids in lemon juice can cut through the fungus that can causes dandruff and dry skin on the scalp.

Simply mix the juice from 1/2 a lemon with 1/4 cup of coconut oil. Massage into a dry scalp and let sit for 15 minutes and wash with the following all natural lemon rinse.

2. Hair Rinse

The acidity and antiseptic elements of lemon can cut through oil and leave the hair clean of lingering shampoo suds. Simply juice 1/4 cup of lemon and mix that with 1/2 of warm salt water. Rinse it through your hair and massage into scalp.

3. Hydrating Face and Hair Mask

The good thing about making your own all natural beauty products is you don’t have to worry about what can go where. This simple hydrating cleanser is good for all your parts! Mix 3/4 cup of olive oil, 1/2 cup of honey, and 3 tablespoons of lemon to make a simple mask and wash for your face and hair.

4. Revitalizing Mask

If your skin is kept clean without the use of harsh chemicals, there should be no need to use excess and oily creams. Try using this revitalizing mask instead. Combine 2 tablespoons of organic plain yogurt with 1 tablespoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice and mix well.

On a freshly cleansed face, apply the mixture and leave to dry for 30 minutes. You should feel the mask tighten, which will help lift dirt and tighten pores. Rinse with warm water followed by cool water.

5. Body Scrub

Epsom salts are not only good for a relaxing bath, but they help draw the toxins from your skin. Simply mix 1 cup of epsom salts with 1 freshly squeezed lemon and use as an exfoliating body scrub the next time you are about to hop into the shower!
