If you’ve ever had to deal with a hornet nest in or near your home, you know what a nightmare they can be. Big, otherworldy-looking and scary, a swarm of hornets and their nest is nothing to mess around with. One wrong move when trying to get them out of your space could spell disaster.
Many people choose to deal with their hornets the way their parents did: with poisonous chemical sprays that emit noxious fumes and really give those hornets something to cry about. The last several years have brought about a shift in thinking where chemicals are concerned. We are beginning to comprehend the damage they can do, not only to ourselves and to the environment as well. We’re beginning to honestly comprehend the connected nature of all things; we’re seeing that we live amongst the creatures… that this is one big kingdom. Living in harmony with the animals isn’t just a nice idea, it is essential to the balance of everything.
Harmony With… Hornets?
So, about those hornets. Am I saying that you should just let them set up camp on your front porch? Absolutely not. But it turns out, harsh poisonous chemicals are completely unnecessary with hornets. Do a bit of reading up on our fair hornet, and you’ll learn that they’re not just rude to you, they’re rude to each other too. They are extremely territorial, and they don’t want to live around other hornets. So, all you have to do is just put out the “no vacancy” sign: a fake hornet’s nest. They won’t build their real nest anywhere near your fake one, so this standoff will end peacefully, year after year.
The old decoy maneuver isn’t exactly a best-kept secret. Hunters use decoy ducks to attract other ducks, for example. You can buy decoys of all varieties, including hornet nests, at many big-box retailers. Pre-fab, made of plastic, probably shipped from China, and stored in a warehouse awaiting your order, it’s not a very harmonious start to a newfound harmony with nature.
A different option is to simply crochet a nest. Google it, there are numerous ideas and patterns available! They turn out incredibly lifelike, and if you already know how to crochet, you probably already have the materials you need at home. No need to drive your car down to the outdoor store and buy a pre-fab nest stuffed into a bunch of packaging. All you need to do is just sit back and have a cup of tea while you spin a unique and interesting un-vitation to the hornets in your area.
Hornets Gone For Good
Simply hang your new creation wherever you don’t want real hornets to live, and you should have no problems with hornets moving forward. Homeowner Sandy Davis can attest to that; she created her nest years ago. (1) Once they know that’s someone else’s domain, they won’t even try to set up camp there.
Solutions like this are a more holistic approach instead of spraying poison into the air near your family. It’s also a nicer option than creating a lot of waste and handing your hard-earned cash over to some corporation. Be friendly and harmonious with the hornets, and Mother Earth too, with no words at all! Just a few flicks of a crochet hook.
