Any trauma to your brain is serious business. That’s why concussion injuries should never be taken lightly.
A concussion is a trauma to your head resulting in a head or brain injury. While there may not be active bleeding, there is still bruising and inflammation. Physiologically, it does not differ from any other bruise on your body.
The concern stems from the fact that your skull is rigid and not pliable. Any swelling that occurs from a head injury will limit the flow of blood to your brain. Inadequate blood flow means your brain does not receive enough oxygen and glucose. The swelling that occurs in the confines of your skull is what makes a concussion such a serious matter.
Even if you think you are fine. A blood vessel may have broken within your skull. This can cause a slow leak of blood. This leak may cause delayed swelling which can be dangerous in the long run.
If you’ve suffered a blow to the head, get checked out by a physician. But don’t be alarmed if you’re not feeling better after your visit. It’s not uncommon for people to suffer after-effects like headaches and neck pain from their concussion. Sometimes these effects are felt long after the injury appears to have healed.
But is there something you can do to help heal the concussion and restore functionality of your brain to post-concussion levels?
Luckily, the answer is yes!
Here are seven ways to enhance your brain function post-concussion. (Remember to get cleared from you doctor before starting any exercise regimen.)
7 Ways to Enhance Your Brain Functions
1. Get Oxygen To Your Brain
Your brain requires oxygen. The more, the better! Oxygen is vital for healing. One way to increase the blood flow to your brain is by practicing deep breathing exercises.
Want to get started? Lie flat on your back. Focus on how relaxed you are. Is there tension in your body? If so, try to relax the parts of your body that are tense.
Clear your mind and take deep breaths. Breathe in slowly through your nose and exhale through your mouth. Continue breathing like this for at least 5 minutes. Work up to 10 to 15 minutes. Repeat as many times during the day as possible.
2. Arnica Montana
A must have for anyone with an athlete in the house! Arnica Montana is a homeopathic remedy that helps your body recover from injury. It speeds healing by reducing swelling and bruising. It’s best to take it as soon after receiving any injury as possible. I’ve recommended this to many people with injuries. They were not disappointed.
Arnica Montana is available both topically and in pilule (small pill) form. Personally, I prefer the pills.
3. Take Supplements For Your Brain
Once your doctor gives you the go-ahead, consider taking supplements. Some supplements have properties that help you heal after a concussion. The three that come to mind are Turmeric, Cayenne Pepper, and Omega-3s.
Turmeric reduces inflammation. Cayenne Pepper increases circulation throughout your body to speed healing. And studies show that Omegas-3 fats increase cognitive ability. Any of these supplements can help speed up your healing process.
Remember to check with your physician before taking supplements. Omega3 supplements have blood thinning properties. If there is active bleeding in your brain, this could be dangerous.
4. Take A Cold Shower
Stimulate your immune system by taking a refreshing, cold shower. It helps increase circulation in your body and is helpful for speeding up the healing process.
5. Reduce Salt And Sugar Intake
Keep your salt and sugar intake to a minimum. They both contribute to water retention. When you are trying to heal a concussion, water retention is the last thing you need!
6. Visit A Chiropractor
Find a Chiropractor certified by the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians. They often treat athletes who suffer from concussions. They have access to special assessment tools to use during an evaluation.
The trauma after a concussion may cause muscle tension and restriction to the neck and back. It can also misalign the spine resulting in pain, headaches, and other neurological symptoms. (Many people think their headaches are from the initial blow to the head, but it stems from the muscle tension in the neck.)
Chiropractors are good at various muscle techniques to release tension. By visiting a good Chiropractor, they can resolve any of these issues.
7. Energy Exercises for Your Brain
A concussion is a jolt to your brain. You can promote healing and improve cognitive function by cleansing the surrounding energy associated with your brain. Here are a few exercises from energy healer, Donna Eden to help you get started.
Exercise 1 – Ear Lobe Brain Exercise
- Stand with you feet shoulder width apart. Toes are pointed forward.
- Starting with your left hand, grab your right earlobe with your LEFT thumb and index finger. Place your thumb in front.
- Take your right hand and cross over your left arm. Grab your left earlobe with your RIGHT thumb and index finger. Again, your thumb is in front.
- While holding your earlobes, do a squat. Go as low as you can. Exhale as you squat. Inhale as you stand. Continue to do 15 squats in this position. Do this exercise daily. Build up to three minutes daily.
Exercise 2 – Cross Over March
Our brains are divided into two hemispheres. Each half performs a distinct set of operations. Balancing energy between the two hemispheres will help cognitive function and improve healing.
- Begin by marching in place. Exaggerate the moves, but keep your arms and legs on both sides of your body moving in sync. Do this five or six times.
- Switch by moving your arms and legs opposite each other. Continue five or six times.
- Alternate marching for two iterations.
Exercise 3 – Isometric Head Press
The last brain activity is the Isometric Head Press. It helps overcome and prevent headaches. You can find this exercise in Donna Eden’s Energy Medicine Book.
- Sit and relax your shoulders. Tilt your head to the right. Bring your ear close to your right shoulder.
- Place your right palm on the right side of your head. Take a deep breathe in as you press your hand against your head. Push hard while holding your breath.
- Slowly release your breath. Be sure to exhale all the way. Drop your hand and stretch your head closer to your right shoulder. Repeat two times.
- Repeat three times on the left side.
When you suffer a concussion, get checked by a doctor to ensure there is no active bleeding.
Once you get the go-ahead, there are many things you can do to speed healing. By trying these natural strategies on a regular basis, you can help reduce lasting side effects and improve cognitive function to your brain.
