Your American Diet is Putting You at Risk of Colon Cancer

colon cancer riskA bad diet can cause a lot of problems for your health. For example you will put on weight, which will affect your figure, your heart and even cause a few mental problems. You could experience a lack of confidence or self-esteem that can be detrimental to your health as a whole. However, all that can change by simply changing your diet.

Did you know that what we eat as Americans could actually be putting us all at risk of colon cancer? This risk is very real and more often than not deadly. Now I understand that not everyone eats the same, but for the majority of Americans their diets stink.

How do their diets stink? Well that’s what I am here to tell you. A study was conducted recently that suggested that Americans are at more risk of colon cancer than other countries, in specific cultures.

A Simple Study With Big Results

An international team of researchers was determined to conduct these tests, and so they did. They called upon 20 South African men and 20 African American men, between the ages of 50 and 65. They had the men swap diets for 2 weeks at a disclosed study site. The meals were prepared for them, so they had no choice in what they were eating.

The results were quite interesting. During the 2 weeks the Americans were given a high fiber African diet loaded with beans and legumes.  The African group was given a meat-heavy Western-style diet.

After the designated time was up researchers examined fecal and colonic content samples from each volunteer. They discovered that after 2 weeks the diet exchange caused a change in the makeup of intestinal microbiota, and also affected the number of biomarkers associated with colon cancer risk.

The change in eating ultimately affected the intestinal lining, levels of fiber fermentation, bacterial metabolic activity and inflammation.

So What Does This Mean?

Why don’t you take a guess, because chances are you’re probably right.  Studies did not give a definitive answer, however the changes from a Western-style diet to African cuisine were noticeable in the American volunteers. The reduced biomarkers suggested a lower risk of colon cancer.

This tells us that the American way of eating must stop if we want to prevent deadly diseases like colon cancer. A simple, yet hearty diet they follow in African is a true testament to the dangers Americans are posing to themselves. Especially when they are eating the garbage that is virtually on every corner across the country.

Changing the way we eat is the first step in reducing our chances of developing a deadly disease. Everything that gets pumped into your body contributes to the risk of colon cancer. This form of cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the country. Many people don’t understand that by changing something as simple as their diet could save their life.

It’s easy, and frankly it must be done. Avoid all the garbage that’s placed in front of you and look for healthy alternatives that will not only please your taste buds but also help maintain a healthy body.
