Of course, adding butter and cheese makes everything better, and this recipe elevates asparagus to the next level of flavorful with a few simple ingredients.
Asparagus For Your Health
Taste-wise, this fresh veggie does well cooked in a variety of manners and produces a bright, clean flavor with earthy notes. It was first cultivated in Greece about 2,500 years ago, named after the Greek word meaning “stalk” or “shoot.” It was touted as an herbal remedy and even an aphrodisiac, with a blend of nutrients that can boost the body and increase health. These claims can now be verified by science: asparagus is rich in many essential vitamins. These nutrients also happen to be extremely beneficial for a healthy body.
Heart Health
High in vitamin K and folate, asparagus is a great heart-healthy choice that may help prevent heart disease. Its many antioxidants include vitamin C, beta-carotene, vitamin E, and the minerals selenium, zinc, and manganese. Asparagus also includes an amino-acid aptly named asparagine, important for brain development and function. Another compound, glutathione, helps destroy carcinogens and may protect against certain types of cancers. (1)
Digestive Health
Full of fiber and protein, asparagus is also great for gut health. It contains a fiber called inulin, which is beneficial for digestion and encourages healthy gut bacteria. This fiber has been known to aid in nutrient absorption, reduce risks of colon cancer, and decrease allergies in some people. This same fiber can also help in regulating insulin in those with type 2 diabetes. (1)
Cleansing And Cleaning
Asparagus can also be used as a natural diuretic, helping the body get rid of excess salt and fluid. Many people suffering from high blood pressure or edema have trouble removing these fluid buildups from their bodies. Because of its ability to flush out toxins from the kidneys, it also prevents stones from forming. Clearly, this small but might vegetable is a hard worker when it comes to cleaning out our systems.
Pregnancy
It’s extremely important for women intending on bearing children to be getting enough folate in their diet. Folate is a key nutrient needed to support a growing fetus, and it can help limit defects in the womb as the baby grows. Asparagus contains a significant amount of folate, so keeping it as a regular part of your diet when pregnant (or trying to conceive) will ensure that your body has an adequate supply. (1)
