States around the US, this week, legalized marijuana, both recreationally and medicinally.
Nevada, Massachusetts, California and Maine all legalized recreational marijuana, while Florida, North Dakota, Arkansas and Montana all passed measures legalized medical marijuana.
Arizona, unfortunately for some, was the lone state to shoot down a resolution to legalize recreational pot.
Many people believe that legalizing marijuana in California, now the state with the 5th largest economy in the world (surpassing the UK), is an international game-changer. It is expected to have a marijuana market greater than Colorado, Washington, Oregon and Alaska combined, said Ethan Nadelmann, executive director of the Drug Policy Alliance.
“When I talk to everybody from allies to government officials in Mexico and I ask them what’s it going to take to transform the debate,” he said, “the response to me is when California legalizes marijuana.”
Marijuana has now become the fastest growing industry in the United States. Experts predict it will be worth $22bn by 2020.
