For years, scientists have recognized a strong relationship between excess body fat and risk for various diseases including Alzheimer’s disease, coronary artery disease, diabetes, and many others.

But how does body fat increase your risk of developing such diseases?

In this video, I present an exciting new study that finally delineates the mechanism whereby body fat can lead to these conditions.

To highlight some of the main points, white adipose tissue (WAT) – the name given to excess body fat – secretes chemicals, which play a vital role in energy metabolism as well as in immune response.

One of these chemicals is called adipokine. Adipokines have been found to regulate neuroinflammation and oxidative stress which are two major physiological processes involved in neurodegeneration and are associated with many chronic neurodegenerative diseases.

One specific type of adipokine is leptin. Low leptin concentrations have been linked to an increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases.

We also found that the “the dysregulation of adipokine production and/or levels has been correlated with several diseases and could notably promote and/or result in obesity-linked metabolic disorders.”
