Avocados aren’t just for guacamole anymore! Avocado oil is getting hot these days, and you don’t even need to put it in a pan. Avocado oil has three main beauty benefits, and it won’t just have you looking good – it’ll have you feeling good too.

My source material from Elle magazine assures me that avocado oil isn’t yet as ubiquitous as coconut oil, so you may have to look around before you find any that you can use. They also suggest you buy it online.

Where Will Avocado Oil Help?

Avocado oil helps with 3 parts of your body: your skin, your hair, and your belly.

Your Skin

Oils are super beneficial for dry skin types and celebrity esthetician Renee Rouleau is starting to notice. Avocado oil “has a high amount of vitamin C in it, which is an antioxidant. And it hydrates deeper and better than coconut oil,” she suggests.

The oil has phytosterols, fatty acids, and sterolin, which are compounds that are like steroids but without the negative effects of steroids. There’s evidence that plant-based sterols (phytosterols) can repair, hydrate, and moisturize skin.

Moisturizing Properties

The Elle source guarantees avocado oil works as a one-swipe eye makeup remover, which bested coconut oil as the avocado oil did not burn her eyes. She also suggests that avocado oil absorbs more quickly than coconut oil and made her skin feel more clear than with coconut oil.

“My skin just felt soft,” she says, which is promising to say the least. She also suggests using the avocado oil on dry, cracked feet and cuticles.

Your Hair

Just like any other oil, avocado oil can be used in your hair. Nikisha Brunson and Cipriana Quann, co-founders of urbanbushbabes.com – a site dedicated to a natural hair lifestyle, discovered the wonders of avocado oil some years ago.

“I use it as a leave-in treatment on my hair after I wash it,” Brunson says. “I also use it as a deep conditioner. I like avocado oil a lot better than coconut oil. Coconut oil tends to dry my hair out leaving it feeling brittle, while avocado oil leaves it super moist and shiny without leaving my hair feeling greasy.”

A Hairy Situation

Her co-founder points to another major advantage of avocado oil: “coconut oil tends to solidify once the temperature is colder,” Quann says. “During the winter your hair turns into a brick!”

Avocado oil (despite what you may think) will not “green-stain” blondes. It’s more like a deep conditioning treatment because of biotin, an enzyme that strengthens hair.

Your Belly

Keri Gans, author of The Small Change Diet, notes avocado oil has lots of vitamin E which strengthens your skin and immune system when ingested. In fact, you should stop cooking with other oils now and switch to avocado oil.

Avocado oil is high in monounsaturated – or heart-healthy – fat, as opposed to coconut oil’s saturated fat. Gans says “there’s no denying when looking at nutritional content, it has a big question mark and avocado oil doesn’t.”
