If you’ve ever had a urinary tract infection, you’ve probably heard of–and tried–a natural UTI remedy before heading to the doctor’s office. While cranberry juice is the most common at-home treatment, you might be missing another homeopathic powerhouse. Apple cider vinegar (ACV) has been shown to have a variety of health benefits, and it looks like this antibacterial concoction can help with urinary tract health as well.
UTIs are incredibly common. These infections happen when bacteria enter the urethra and infect the urinary tract. Common symptoms include pain and burning when urinating, bloody urine, frequent urination, and feeling like you’ve got to go even when your bladder is empty. (1) Of course, it’s important to seek medical care before your symptoms become serious. But if you want to try a natural UTI remedy while you’re waiting for an open doctor’s appointment, ACV is a great option to get some quick relief.
Why Apple Cider Vinegar Is A Great UTI Remedy
Apple cider vinegar’s unique properties result from a two-step process. Crushed apples are first exposed to yeast, fermenting the sugars. This turns the apples into alcohol. Beneficial bacteria are then added to the alcohol to ferment it. As a result, the mixture becomes acetic, the main ingredient in vinegar. (2)
The enzymes and friendly bacteria are what give ACV it’s antibacterial properties. Vinegar’s use as an ancient medicinal treatment is well documented, and a 2018 study verified ACV’s effects on different bacteria. Because urinary tract infections are caused by bacteria, the acidic and antimicrobial properties of ACV can be effective at combating infection. (3) While doctors commonly prescribe antibiotics to treat UTIs–which are effective–there has been growing concern of the body’s resistance to these drugs over time. Using ACV as a preventative UTI remedy may lessen the occurrence of infection and reduce symptoms should they come.
It’s always important to consult your doctor, as UTIs can cause serious problems if left unchecked. Apple cider vinegar, though, is safe and healthy as long it’s taken in moderation. Here are some UTI remedy recipes with ACV as the star ingredient.
ACV Dosing Recipes
- ACV + Cranberry Juice. Cranberries contain a compound that can prevent E. coli bacteria from sticking to tissues and taking root in the body. Add 1-2 TBSPs of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar to one glass of unsweetened cranberry juice. (4, 5)
- ACV + Water. Because of ACV’s intense acidity, it’s always recommended to dilute it to avoid damage to the throat and stomach. Add 1 TBSP of ACV to 8 ounces of water and drink 8 times per day to flush out bacteria. (4)
- ACV + Salad. Adding an ACV salad dressing to your lunch is a healthy way to get these antibacterial benefits. Mix 1/4 cup raw ACV, 2 TBSPs fresh lemon juice, 1/3 cup olive oil, 1-2 TBSPs honey, and salt and pepper to taste. Store in a mason jar for a healthy vinegarette anytime. (6)
Pesky UTIs are frustrating, especially for those that tend to get them regularly. Adding ACV to your diet as a UTI remedy just might be the perfect simple addition to your healthy routine.
