In the small fishing town of Ísafjörður, Iceland, there is a new development in road safety that is turning heads and hopefully stopping commuters in their tracks. A new 3D crosswalk has just been painted that appears to be floating in the road thanks to a cleverly-painted optical illusion.
Besides making it look like pedestrians are walking on air, these 3D crosswalk designs are intended to ensure that drivers slow down and stop at crosswalks and intersections once they spot what looks like floating white bars.
Icelandic environmental commissioner Ralf Trylla called for these 3D crosswalks in Ísafjörður after seeing a similar project being carried out in New Delhi, India. With the help of street painting company Vegmálun GÍH, his vision became a reality.
While innovative and fun, there are concerns that these designs could cause vehicles to stop suddenly, which could lead to dangerous collisions. The illusion can only be seen from a certain angle, and only for a few seconds as drivers are moving. The hope is that the colors and design will be enough to get drivers to slow down as to inspect what they’re seeing as they approach.
Similar initiatives have been done in China with success. Both drivers and pedestrians appreciate the effort being done to keep people safe, plus it’s fun to look at!
