While most people are always waiting to jump on the latest fashion trends, one Berlin man’s timeless style proves that new is not always better. Though most assume he’s seen over a century of life (they claim he is 104-years-old, when he’s only in his 70s), Günther Krabbenhöft’s 75 years haven’t stopped him from expressing himself through his wardrobe. Sporting an eclectic yet classy 1920s-inspired style, Günther is a trendsetter for Germany’s hip Berlin fashion scene.
Günther’s Timeless Style Discovered
Fashion photographer Björn Akstinat couldn’t have imagined how his blog post would go viral. A fashionably dressed man waiting for a train would be the perfect addition to Akstinat’s catalog of Berlin street style; the photo quickly resonated with the online community. Günther Krabbenhöft, sporting a red bowler hat, brown tweed jacket, and leather driving gloves, proves to be the hippest grandpa anyone has ever seen.
Günther–who raised a daughter alone and worked as a cook for 50 years–is now retired and the grandfather of two. His age has no effect on his style, as he’s always enjoyed dressing smartly to please himself. “I think I’m dressed fairly normally. It has always been this way. That’s how I went to work, that’s how I go to fitness training,” Günther told Akstinat for his blog. “I want to look at myself with joy. It is always a mirror of myself.” (1)
His fitted 3-piece suits accented with bowties and pocket squares are often accompanied by accessories of a bygone era: driving gloves, a pocket-watch chain, and a sleek cane. Laced leather shoes are the norm, though sporting a stylish sneaker or sleek loafer is also in his repertoire. No matter what activity is on the agenda, this grandpa always dresses to the nines.
Living Life To The Full
Günther’s timeless style is evidence of his zest for life. While he enjoys the same activities most men his age do–having a coffee with friends or taking a leisurely stroll–this Berlin fashion icon also has a penchant for busting a move on the dance floor. Berliners can find Günther partying at exclusive nightclub Berghain at least 3 times per week. And don’t think he’s gently swaying or swing dancing; videos on Günther’s Instagram dancing to techno music would put many young people’s dance moves to shame. (2, 3)
Since his original photo went viral, demand from fashion photographers has given Günther a new day job. Aside from his over 56,000 followers on Instagram, this elderly style icon has built an extensive portfolio of his iconic looks. Modeling for numerous designers and placing 10th in GQ’s “100 Best Dressed Men In Germany” are among his accomplishments. Additionally, Günther’s portfolio includes features in campaign ads for Google Play and other large companies. (4)
Finding Timeless Style At Every Age
If Günther’s iconic style proves anything, it’s that every person at every age can express themselves through their clothing. Günther thoroughly enjoys life according to his motto: “Live wild and dangerous.” Embracing new experiences and connecting with new people–all while looking your best–is in reach of everyone regardless of age. This hipster grandpa proves that clothing can add more joy and spark to our lives.
